Lawrence golfer advances to State tournament
LAWRENCE - Lawrence senior Zach Smith shot 80 to finish in third place at the golf Regional held at Klinger Lake Country Club on May 30. He also qualified to play in the Division 4 state tournament, which will be played at Forest Akers East on June 8-9.
Smith was the top golfer in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Lakeshore Division this year, finishing on top at all five of the division Jamborees. As a junior and senior, Smith was the medalist in 12 straight Jamborees.
“I'm proud of Zach,” said Lawrence Coach Scott Sanborn. “He lowered his nine-hole scoring average by three strokes this year, and his performance at the regional tournament was solid. He played in the state tournament last year, so he knows what to expect going forward.”
Smith has received a golf scholarship from Lawrence Technological University near Detroit, where he plans to study civil engineering.
