Lawrence Athletes of the Year named

    LAWRENCE - Lawrence Public Schools has named its top senior male and female athletes of the year. This year’s honors went to Ethan Payment and Valerie Norris.
    Payment  participated in three sports during his high school career - football, basketball and baseball. In football, he was named team captain and team Most Valuable Player (MVP), and the SAC named him Second Team All-Conference.
    In basketball, Payment was team captain and team MVP, and made First Team All-Conference.
    In baseball, Payment’s batting average is .341, with a slugging percentage of .500.
    Payment has graduated with a 3.84 grade point average (GPA) and plans to attend Lake Michigan College and play baseball.
    Norris  participated in cross country, sideline cheer, basketball, competitive cheer, and softball at LHS. She was Honorable Mention All-Conference in cross country; her basketball team named her MVP and Most Improved, and she made First Team All-BCS.
    In competitive cheer, she earned Most Improved.
     In softball, she finished the season with eight homeruns, eight  doubles, and two triples. Norris was so feared at the plate in that her opponents have intentionally walked her 15 times.         From the pitcher’s mound, she struck out 138 of the batters she faced.
    She is part of the softball Academic All-State Team and was individually honored Academic All- State.
    Norris graduated with a 4.35 grade point average and will attend Southwestern Michigan College this fall, where she plans to pursue a career as an accountant.
