“Ableism 101” workshop to be offered at VBISD Conference Center

LAWRENCE - Disability Network Southwest Michigan will host a  free workshop -  Ableism 101 - Friday, Oct. 25,  from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Van Buren Intermediate School District Conference Center, 490 S. Paw Paw St.,  Lawrence.
Though the workshop is free;  pre-registration is required by contacting Miranda Grunwell at: grunwellm@dnswm.org or (269) 345-1516, ext. 120.
In its simplest form, ableism is the belief system that tells us it is better to be non-disabled than it is to be disabled. Ableism also examines disability discrimination on a systemic level by looking at the way our society designs physically and socially segregated systems.
Join Disability Network for a discussion on identifying harmful cultural ideas around disability. This workshop will explore how the language we use around disability is a key component to supporting equality or perpetuating stigma. Participants will identify and challenge their own unconscious bias around disability and learn how to support the disability rights and disability justice community in Southwest Michigan.
Lewis Whalen, program director at Disability Network, said, “In most cases, individuals and organizations don’t realize they are contributing to the marginalization of people with disabilities; awareness is the first step to creating positive change. This workshop is designed to raise people’s awareness and offer alternative ways to talk about and approach disability on both a personal and systemic level.”
This is a fragrance-free environment. Attendees are asked not wear perfume, cologne or other scented products to this event.
Founded in 1981 by a small group of disability advocates, Disability Network Southwest Michigan educates and connects people with disabilities to the community resources they need to live independently and advocates for social change. Disability Network’s advocacy work is focused on creating communities that value disability as human diversity, free of attitudinal barriers, where all people benefit with full access and inclusion.
