2017 Great Lakes Burn Camp parade held

Van Buren County fire departments and districts were well represented in the 2017 Great Lakes Burn Camp parade. For 23 years, young burn survivors aged 6-17, from across the country have been escorted by motorbikes (439) and fire trucks (42) from Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo to Pretty Lake Camp, near Mattawan, to stay for a week of arts, crafts, sport activities and camping comradery.  The vision of the Great Lakes Burn Camp is to provide an environment for the youngsters to “laugh, play, heal, grow and just be a kid...”  The campers’ costs for their experience is covered by donations throughout the year.  Taking part in the honorary escort were county firefighters and EMTs,  from left:  Riley Doman of Gobles-Pine Grove; 2nd Lt. Steve Lowe, Michelle Curtis and Morgane Curtis, all of Lawrence Twp. Emergency Services; Cory Burson of  Gobles-Pine Grove; Chief Don Bogart, Alysha Bogart (up on GLBC Engine No. 9) and Jimmy Enochs, all of Keeler Fire & Rescue; John Taylor-Maki and Kevin DeWitt of Columbia Twp.; Rick Dunkerley and Kenneth Dunkerley of Paw Paw; Dave Baden of Lawton; and Greg Dean and Capt.
