Bronson admits first patient with COVID-19

Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo  admitted its first patient with a positive test result for COVID-19 this week, according to a press release issued Tuesday. The patient is a resident of Calhoun County and was reported to be in isolation at the hospital at that time.
The hospital’s notice stated that Bronson is following standard infection control measures to protect its providers, employees and other patients from exposure to the virus. Staff caring for this and any future COVID-19 patients wear proper protective gear and hospital employees are screened before each shift to ensure they are symptom-free.
Bronson’s preparedness for the arrival of COVID-19 in southwest Michigan also includes travel recommendations for employees and employed providers to ensure a full complement of staff is available to care for patients during the pandemic.
To further protect the health of patients and staff, visitor restrictions were updated on March 15 following an executive order from Governor Gretchen Whitmer stating no visitors will be allowed at any Michigan hospital except under special circumstances.
At Bronson hospitals, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., two visitors will be allowed only for these special circumstances:
    •Patients undergoing surgery
    •Patients in Labor and Delivery
    •Pediatric patients
    •NICU patients
    •Patients in end-of-life situations
Bronson advises anyone who suspects they have COVID-19 symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath), to stay home and take one of the following next steps which will determine if medical care or testing is needed:
    • Call your primary care provider via telephone or Bronson MyChart:

    • Or do a BronsonConnect Video Visit:

    • Go to the hospital only if you have serious symptoms such as trouble breathing, bluish skin color, unable to eat or drink, unresponsive, etc.
