At its last quarterly grant meeting for the fiscal year, The Pokagon Fund (TPF) Board of Directors approved over $313,000 in grant awards to non-profit organizations located in Harbor Country, Dowagiac and Hartford, and South Bend, IN. Locally, the Van Buren County Historical Museum, the City of Hartford, Hartford Public Schools and Hartford Public Library are all recipients.
The Hartford Public Library received $2,500 to underwrite their Summer Reading Program; Hartford Public Schools, $15,000 to build classroom libraries for students in second and third grades; and, Van Buren County Historical Museum, $5,000 for educational workshops.
“The Pokagon Fund has enjoyed contributing to the long-term preservation of this fascinating piece of Hartford’s history.  This beautiful three-story brick poorhouse dates to 1884 and provided shelter in the early days for almost 60 people at any given time,” said the Fund’s Executive Director Janet Cocciarelli.  “The local volunteers have done an extraordinary job maintaining so many different aspects of the museum, including a replica log cabin and blacksmith works.  Our donation will be used to offer educational workshops on tuck-pointing, which aligns nicely with our funding focus of education and community vitality,” said Cocciarelli.
The Hartford Area Chamber of Commerce also received $1,500 to increase the children’s activities at the Strawberry Festival 2019; and, Michigan State University Youth Development, $500 to support ACORNS Youth Program. United Way of Southwest Michigan Dolly Parton Imagination Li-brary received $5,000 to increase the total number of Harbor Country children who receive 12 books delivered to their home each year.
The Pokagon Fund is a non-profit, private foundation supported by revenue from the Four Winds Casino Resort in New Buffalo, MI.
