ALMENA TWP. - Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel Abbott reported that the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit detectives followed up on tip information and obtained a search warrant for a residence in Almena Township to search for  stolen property.
On July 2, at approximately 10 a.m., detectives from the Criminal Investigations Division (CID), deputies from the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office Uniform Response division and detectives from the Michigan State Police Southwest Commercial Auto Recovery Unit (SCAR) executed the search warrant.
Detectives initially made contact with a 37- year-old male and a 31-year-old female, both of Mattawan. Abbott said a man was hiding inside the residence and found by detectives during subsequent searches of the residence. Once located and secured, the man supplied detectives with false information about his identity.
Abbott said detectives will submit for charges of resisting and obstructing on Christopher Scholtes, 42, of Mattawan, for those actions. Once Scholtes’ true identity was revealed, officers discovered there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest out of Kalamazoo.
The residence and property were searched pursuant to the search warrant and the officers recovered property that was stolen from a breaking and entering complaint the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office Uniform Response Division had responded to last month, specifically a zero turn Husqvarna lawn mower, Honda 250 cc motorcycle, rifle, acetylene torch, power tools and hand tools.
During the search detectives observed illegal narcotics paraphernalia in plain view. Narcotics detectives then obtained a narcotics search warrant, to further search the residence for illegal narcotics and found paraphernalia used for smoking methamphetamine and digital drug scales.
At the same time, Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office Uniform Response division conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle in close proximity to the search warrant. The driver, Gregory Campos, 28, of Mattawan, was arrested on an outstanding warrant for his arrest out of Van Buren County.
After speaking to the man, narcotics detectives were able to obtain a narcotics search warrant for the Campos’ residence. This search warrant was executed by narcotics detectives after the initial search was completed at the original residence and found was illegal drug paraphernalia used for smoking methamphetamine.
No arrests have been made at this time in regards to the narcotics search warrants. The narcotics and resisting and obstructing incidents will be forwarded to the prosecutor for review.    Abbott said there is still additional outstanding stolen property from the breaking and entering that has not yet been recovered. The investigation is ongoing.
