New Gobles Elementary principal is ready for new experiences

GOBLES - Mike Banyas has been named the new Gobles Elementary School principal.
Banyas has spent 23 years in education, as a teacher and administrator. He has served 20 years as an elementary teacher in third and fifth grades, with the majority as a sixth grade teacher. He spent 19 years as a teacher at Brown City, MI, and one year as a teacher at Mio-Ausable Schools in Mio, MI.
While at Lakeville School District, located in the state’s thumb area, he spent  two years as an elementary principal and one year as a middle school principal.
Banyas began his new duties in Gobles July 1. His two-year contract runs through June 30, 2021.
Banyas said his career in education was greatly influenced during his own junior high school years. “That’s when I decided to be a teacher.” He also credited that time having many good principals.
In making the trek to the state’s southwest side, Banyas said, “You can work where you’re comfortable, or stretch your legs. I wanted to stretch my legs. Not everybody can do that.”
Gobles Public Schools Superintendent Jeff Rehlander said, “We’re excited to identify a quality candidate like Mr. Banyas.  I look forward to his contributions he will make with our young people at Gobles Elementary School.”
Banyas fills the post vacated by the retirement of Terry Breen, who served 11 years as principal.
