Lawrence man arrested to face domestic assault charges

Paul Garrod -

LAWRENCE - A 24-year-old Lawrence-Covert area man faces two counts of domestic assault and other charges, following an incident January 5 in Lawrence, according to a press release from the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.
Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel Abbott said that at approximately 12:38 a.m., Van Buren County Sheriff’s deputies responded to an address on Elizabeth Street in the Village of Lawrence for a report of a domestic assault.
During the call to Van Buren 911, the suspect grabbed the victim’s phone and broke it, ending the call. When deputies arrived, they learned that the suspect had assaulted his ex-girlfriend, 22,  and her mother, 67.  The suspect had fled the scene.
Deputies, K-9 Kuno, and the Pokagon Tribal Police arrived at the scene and K-9 Kuno and his handler attempted to locate the suspect. Deputies on perimeter were able to follow the track via GPS through MASTRACK, newly-acquired equipment which gives assisting deputies a live up-to-date feed on their location.  K-9 Kuno was able to locate the suspect a short distance away from the house. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.
The suspect was found to be on probation out of Van Buren County and had a valid Personal Protection Order (PPO) in place with one of the victims being the protected party. He was transported to the Van Buren County Jail on two counts of domestic assault, interfering with 911 communication, and a PPO violation. Charges are also being sought for probation violation.
