Paw Paw Library no longer collects overdue fines

As of December 1, 2019, the Paw Paw District library is no longer charging overdue fines and will waive past fines on all accounts.
Library Board trustees adopted the new policy at their November meeting. “Fines keep people, particularly children, and low-income families, from using the library,” said board president Sherry Bennett. “Our goal was to remove that obstacle.”
The Paw Paw District Library joins a growing number of national and local libraries to eliminate overdue fines.
“From what we know of other libraries’ experiences eliminating fines, we expect the new policy will result in a busier library,” said library director Gretchen Evans. “We hope people who stopped using the library because of fines will come back, and see all the great things the library has to offer.”
Fines account for less than one percent of the library’s budget. The loss is expected to be offset by the staff time saved in collecting and administering fines.
Even without fines, due dates are still important at the library. Patrons are still expected to return items on or before the due date. To ensure items are returned on time, the library will notify patrons when an item is overdue and will charge fees for lost and damaged items.
