The Mattawan boys soccer team continued its quest for a State title last week with a big 6-0 win over Thornapple Kellogg for the Regional championship at DeWitt.            The Wildcats wasted little time taking the upper hand in the title game. Just seven minutes in, Josh Filiputti fed the ball to Connor Williams, who found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. Chad Harrison earned the second goal of the matchup, and Mattawan’s 2-0 lead held  until just over the 20th minute of play. Filiputti took advantage of a solo opportunity and booted the ball with his left foot past the Thornapple Kellogg goalie.
The Wildcats didn’t let up and scored yet one more time  before halftime. Harrison passed to Williams, who claimed his second goal of the game and gave Mattawan a 4-0 lead at the break.
Mattawan capped off the championship by earning two more goals. Five minutes into play, Filiputti earned his second goal of the game, giving Mattawan the 5-0 lead. The final goal of the game came from Mattawan junior Jack Elms. The Wildcats held the 6-0 lead for the final 20 minutes of  play.
With the regional championship, Mattawan moved on to the State semi-final game against Forest Hills Northern. A win will give Mattawan a chance at the State title on November 2.
