    MATTAWAN - A Mattawan High School student has been named the grand prize winner of an essay contest  sponsored by Talons Out Honor Flight.
    Emma Alzner was named the top winner of nearly two dozen  essay submissions received  from southern Michigan students.
    Alzner will fly with Talons Out on April 22, to read the eulogy of her subject, Ernest Frey, at Arlington National Cemetery.
    Each essay focused on a Michigan veteran who has passed, who served in World War II or the Korean War. Each student had to include a video of them reading a eulogy of their subject, to prepare for the Arlington reading.
    “Each student took the time to get to know a Michigan veteran,” board member Dan Moyle said. “At the end of the day, that’s one of greatest accomplishments - honoring a hero by keeping their story alive. Many of the submissions brought about stories that may have been lost in time. Instead, they will live on in these students. We’re honored to play a small part in keeping their legacies alive.”
    The three honorable mentions were:
    •Elena Phillips - Gobles;
    •Kate Posey - Centreville, and,
    •Victoria Sparks - Adrian.
