PAW PAW - Van Buren County Commissioners on Tuesday approved the adjustment of salaries of elected officials  of the executive branch.
Commissioners approved to adjust the salaries of the county clerk, prosecuting attorney, register of deeds, treasurer, drain commissioner and sheriff, effective the first pay of 2021. The new salaries include: county clerk -  $75,825; prosecuting attorney - $119,255; register of deeds -  $72,543; treasurer -$76,105; drain commissioner, $71,790, and sheriff - $100,536.
The salary adjustments were based upon a survey of counties based on population size, taxable value of property, and proximity to Van Buren County. Commissioners also recommended the county clerk  receive an additional $2,000 for election. Commissioners recommended a two percent increase on 2021 base salaries to be effective the first pay of 2022, which is the  same percentage increase granted all county employees.
Following an earlier truth-in-taxation public hearing, commissioners approved the county’s 2020 millage rate which includes the following: The levy of 7.3504 mills, which is 4.4566 allocated mills, 0.9370 mills for ambulance, 0.9769 mills for roads and 0.5332 mills for public safety, 0.2471 mills for public transit, 0.0996 for conservation district, and 0.1000 for veterans relief.
Without the public hearing the county would have only been able to levy 7.1901 mills.
