Ottorino Schincariol, right, an Italian immigrant, started Paw Paw Wine Distributors in 1943. His first products were wines made in Paw Paw, including those from St. Julian Winery. His sons, Ron, far left, and John, center, later continued leadership of the family business. The former Paw Paw Wine Distributors building on South Kalamazoo Street, Paw Paw, was demolished to make way for the Tapper Ford dealership.

KALAMAZOO - Paw Paw Wine Distributors, a local, family-owned beer and wine distributor, has  announced it is selling the distribution rights to its portfolio of beer and wine to Alliance Beverage of Grand Rapids, Great Lakes Wine and Spirits of Highland Park and Vintage Wine Co. of Roseville.
Paw Paw Wine Distributors has been a southwest Michigan fixture for more than 75 years.
“We want to thank the entire Paw Paw Wine Distributor family, our suppliers and retailers for their years, and even decades, of service and partnerships,” said Dave Bogen, president of Paw Paw Wine Distributors. “Our employees have always been the driving force behind our longevity and success.”
Ottorino Schincariol, an Italian immigrant, started Paw Paw Wine Distributors in 1943. His first products were wines made in Paw Paw, including St. Julian Winery. From there, the company continued to expand with new product lines including E&J Gallo, Robert Mondavi, Kendall Jackson and Heineken Brewing Co.
In the 1980s, under the leadership of Otto’s sons Ron and John, Paw Paw Wine Distributors became the Kalamazoo area distributor of Kalamazoo Brewing Company, known today as Bell’s Brewing Company. The company has continued to grow under third generation direction, and moved to a larger facility in 2009 to accommodate that growth.
Paw Paw Wine Distributors has focused on its neighboring communities over the years, helping raise money for the KVCC Scholarship Fund, March of Dimes, Lions Club, United Way, Lakeview Foundation, Humane Society, area festivals, several youth sports, performing arts sponsorships, and more.
“It has been a privilege being a part of this family legacy of service to our community and working alongside so many wonderful people,” said Paul Schincariol, Paw Paw Wine Distributors board chairman and Ottorino’s grandson. “Alliance Beverage, Great Lakes Wine and Spirits and Vintage Wine Co.  – all family owned beer and wine distributors – have a similar history of corporate responsibility and community involvement. These shared values helped make them a good fit as buyers.”
Paw Paw Wine Distributors will continue operations with a transition expected at the end of this year.
