PAW PAW - Photo: Josh Gettig, owner of Van Buren Coffee Company, in Paw Paw, left, presents a symbolic check for $1,500 to Samuel VerHage, of Gobles, to be used for the boy’s mission to collect blankets for the homeless in the area. The check represents proceeds from sales of a signature roasted coffee, Blanket Blend, created and distributed by VBCC to help VerHage raise funds.
The kind-hearted 12-year-old started his blanket drive four years ago simply because it seemed to him the homeless needed to keep warm. He has by now collected and handed out more than 2,500 blankets to those in need at Martin Luther King Park on Rose Street in Kalamazoo and the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission, among other locations.
Also on hand at Monday’s presentation, from Samuel’s left, were his mother, Denise VerHage, Courtney Gettig, and Anthony Gettig. Second photo is of an overflowing collection box at Van Buren Coffee Company full of blankets, which Samuel intends to hand out on Saturday.
