Rick Mitchell

PAW PAW - Following a 25-year career as Paw Paw High School’s Athletic Director, Rick Mitchell tendered his resignation April 27 to the Paw Paw Board of Education.
Paw Paw Public Schools’ staff and administration of-fered their praise to Mitchell for his many years of dedicated service.
Trever Tate,  Paw Paw Middle School athletic director, said of Mitchell, “Whether it was an ‘oh no’ or a ‘boom, boom, boom,’ Rick always did his job with a bit of humor and wanted the best for all kids.”
Cris Martin, who served as Mitchell’s secretary said, “It’s been my privilege to have been Rick’s secretary for over 20 years. One of his duties, besides being athletic director, was to help supervise the lunchroom. Rick never just supervised... he interacted with the students.  Many times I had to seek Rick out during lunch for a question, and he would be sitting at a table eating his lunch with the students, or they would be gathered around him asking him questions or advice.”
Martin added, “It was obvious they had great respect for him.  His love, dedication and devotion to our school, students and community will forever be unmatched.  It’s been an honor,  and I am extremely grateful that I had the opportunity to work alongside Rick, my friend and fellow Paw Paw High School alumnus for all these years.”
Paw Paw High School Principal Tammy Southworth said of Mitchell, “When I came to Paw Paw 12 years ago, Rick welcomed me with open arms and made me feel at home. We’ve enjoyed a ton of laughs over the years, and I’ll miss having him in the office next door. His love for Paw Paw is immense. He is so proud of this town and this school and that impacts everything he does. He is first and foremost a coach - always giving pointers and encouragement to kids and adults alike. I’m so glad to have had him in my corner over the years.”
PPPS Superintendent Rick Reo,  said Mitchell was “a fixture in Paw Paw Schools for a long time, and his presence here day- in-and-day-out will be missed.”
Reo said, “As a parent who has had four kids go through Paw Paw schools, I can say that Rick has a great heart for kids, and he has always gone out of his way to support them. He is a good person, and we’ve been fortunate to have him as part of our team here in Paw Paw. We have a lot of dedicated people working for Paw Paw Schools, but we’d be hard-pressed to find someone who has put in more hours than Rick  working with kids at the school, in the gym, and on the playing fields.”
In addition to athletic director, Mitchell also served as head boys  and girls varsity basketball coach.
