Adams honored for long-term service to High School Athletic Association

    PAW PAW - The Michigan High School Athletic Association recently recognized a  Paw Paw resident for his 50 years of service officiating  in the MHSAA.
    Robert “Bob” Adams was recently honored during the MHSAA annual banquet.
    Adams, 71, and his wife, Deborah, have three grown childdren, two daughters, Ann Marie Louise Adams and Kristen Renee Adams, and a son, Robert Charles Adams, II.
    Adams graduated  from Paw Paw in 1965. He attended Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Kalamazoo, from 1969  to 1970, and Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, in 1970.  He then enrolled at Wayne State University,     Detroit, from 1970 to 1971, where he graduated, with a degree with distinction, in mortuary science.
    Since March of 1987, Adams is owner and president of Adams-Zolp Funeral Home, now Adams Funeral Home, Paw Paw.
    Prior to that, from June 1963 to March, 1987, Adams  served as manager/director of Hawley Funeral Home, Paw Paw.
    In 1965, Adams enlisted in the United States Army, and served in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged Nov. 20, 1968, where he attained the rank of platoon sergeant.
    Adams received the first  Charlie Maxwell Award for “Most Outstanding Baseball Player” at Paw Paw High School, in 1965.
    While at PPHS, Adams  lettered in four varsity sports, from  1963 to 1965, football, baseball, basketball and track.
    At Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Adams organized the Varsity Club for Sports in 1969-1970, and served as its first vice-president during that time.
    In 1982, Adams organized and commanded the American Legion, McGowan-Johnson Post  68 Color Guard. The color guard won four  State championships and placed second and third in National competitions.
    It also performed  at the 1985 Cherry Bowl and at Tiger Stadium.
    In 1987, Adams  officiated at the Michigan High School Football Playoffs at the former Pontiac Silverdome. He would repeat  those duties in 1991 and 1998.
    In 1989, Adams organized the  Past Commanders Club of McGowan-Johnson Post 68, American Legion, where he also served as a past president.
    He was also a member of the First United States Delegation of Funeral Directors to visit the USSR in 1989.
    In 1994, Adams  served as chairman and helped design Maple City Veterans Park in Paw Paw. It was dedicated the following year.
    The Paw Paw Lions Club recognized Adams as its  Citizen of the Year for 1994-95.
    In 1995, Adams was honored with Life Membership in the American Legion by McGowan-Johnson Post 68, Paw Paw.
    Adams is also a Life Member, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 2532, as he was the first Vietnam veteran to join the post in 1967, and where he currently remains  active.
    He was also Past President and Past Secretary of the Paw Paw Kiwanis Club, where he still holds membership since  1973.
    His sports-affiliated memberships  include:
    •Michigan High School Athletic Association (Sports Official) - 1968 - present;
    •Member and officer on the Board of Directors, Tri-County Officials Association - 1984 - 2009;
    •Terrill’s Football Crew - 1984-2009;
    •Line to Gain Crew at WMU  - 1982 -1985;
    •Great Lakes Collegiate Official Association - 1996 - 2002;
    •    (NCAA) College Football Official;
    •    Certified Trainer of Football Officials for the Michigan     High School Athletic Association - 1997- present;
    •Formed Adams Football Crew for High School Football  2009-2015;
    •Formed Van Kal Officials Association  – First president -  2009-2013;
    •Observer of Officials for MHSAA - 2009 - 2015.
    •Honored in May of  2018 with Fifth Year member Award of the Michigan High School Athletic Association for officiating.
    Last year, Adams was honored with the Legacy Award by the Paw Paw Area Chamber of Commerce.
