Paw Paw River summer paddle events planned

What better way to celebrate the opening of a water trail than to actually get people out paddling? That is exactly what Two Rivers Coalition (TRC) has planned for this summer with a series of community paddles along the Paw Paw River.
Work has been proceeding the last two years to create a 68-mile-long paddle trail on the river, beginning at the Village of Paw Paw and extending all the way to Benton Harbor. This summer, there will be seven separate community paddle events at different towns along the river showcasing some of the varied segments of the water trail, according to Kris Martin, of the Southwest Michigan Planning Commission.
The first paddle will occur in Benton Harbor on Thursday afternoon, June 14, at the Graham Avenue boat launch on the Paw Paw River. Participants will paddle upstream, past the Harbor Shores development and golf course to the N. Stevens St. access, then turn around and float back to Graham Ave.
Third Coast Paddling will have its Graham Avenue location open for kayak and paddleboard rentals and is donating $5 from every rental to TRC. Participants should plan to arrive and unload their boats or purchase their rental between 2:30 and 2:45 p.m. The paddle will begin promptly at 3 p.m. with a return to the boat launch by 5 p.m.
After the paddle, everyone is invited to Community Pint Night at The Livery, located at 190 5th Street in Benton Harbor. Between 5 and 8 p.m., The Livery will donate $1 to TRC for every pint sold.
According to Kevin Haight, President of TRC, the group will use any funds raised to support its environmental programs, including continued testing for E. coli in streams throughout southwest Michigan.
During the month of July, additional river paddles will be held in Paw Paw, Lawrence, Hartford, Watervliet, Coloma, and Riverside. TRC will even have a limited supply of loaner kayaks at these July paddle events (RSVP necessary). Details as to date and time for these paddles will be posted on the group’s website and Facebook page.
Two Rivers Coalition is a volunteer environmental group working to improve the health of the Black River and Paw Paw River watersheds through conservation, education, and advocacy.
