Paw Paw Township approves use of ORVs on roads

Paul Garrod •

PAW PAW - Following an earlier public hearing on an ordinance that would allow  the use of Off Road Vehicles (ORV) on Paw Paw Township roadways, the Paw Paw Township Board approved the issue Monday night.
During the public hearing, Lawrence Township Supervisor Donna Spenner shared her board’s findings on ORV and the township board ordinance governing  it.
Paw Paw Township Board Supervisor Don Stull said that he had attended the Lawrence Township Board’s ORV public hearing.
Both township supervisors hope that other surrounding townships will join in and  approve an ORV ordinance.
Van Buren County Sheriff Daniel Abbott told the Paw Paw Township Board that other counties have enacted ORV ordinances and have not experienced any problems.
The issue has come before the Van Buren County Board of Commissioners, which “tabled” it.
The board also approved  a Paw Paw Public Schools winter weather closing policy that the township would follow, with a re-evaluation at noon.
In the event that the office would close due to inclement weather, notices would be sent to NewsChannel 3, placed on the  township website and on the township office door.
Neighboring townships, Almena and Antwerp, follow school closing policy, as does the Paw Paw Public Library, with a re-evaluation at noon.
