Lawton lifters hoist first place trophy from state competition
Records have been smashed and the proverbial bar has been raised as the Lawton Blue Devil Powerlifting Club brought home the varsity Men’s State Champion-ship title on Saturday, March 11, 2017, while at Croswell-Lexington High School.
This is the fifth year of competition for the Lawton Powerlifting Club, and it has grown steadily from a few individuals participating into a team that consistently out-numbers and out-lifts larger schools at meets.
The senior class of lifters has taken ownership of this program, and take great pride in the “Lawton Lifting Legacy” they have built. The student-athletes are the driving force behind the growth and success of this program, and with much encouragement and direction from Coach Mitch Nycum, this program has excelled in its short lifetime.
Not only did they win the state team title, the Blue Devils claimed two individual championships and scored in five classes. Trevor Lull and Demetrius Cannon finished 1-2 at 132 pounds, and Jason Craig topped the field at 242 pounds, which contributed to the team’s 48 points. Sophomore Amaya Taylor set two state records for the female junior varsity team in the squat lift and total pounds lifted. Alec VanOrman, Cannon and Emma Stephayn took second places and Tyler Mann placed fifth.
