Court magistrate honored

	Following 43 years of service in Van Buren County courts,  7th District Court Magistrate Craig Hess, shown in center, was honored last Friday, June 29,  during a ceremony in the Van Buren County Probate Courtroom. Hess officially retired July 2.  Susan K. Zuiderveen, below,  has been appointed the new magistrate for 7th District Court.

    PAW PAW - Retiring 7th District Court Magistrate Craig Hess was honored last Friday, June 29,  during a ceremony in the Van Buren County Probate Courtroom.
    Hess told those gathered in the courtroom, “It’s been a good 43 years.” He thanked his wife,   Lynn, and their children and grandchildren for their support.
    Former Van Buren County Judge Paul Hamre said of Hess,
“He is a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and human being.”
    Van Buren County Commissioner Chairman Richard Godfrey presented a county resolution to Hess. In the resolution, commissioners cited Hess “as a  dedicated, caring and well-respected person and wished him and his family all the best in the future.”
    State Rep. Beth Griffin  presented  Hess with a Special Tribute, signed by local legislators and the governor, which read in part: “With the personal sense of duty that Craig Hess brings to work each day,  he has been able to meet all challenges that came his way with enthusiasm  and a genuine interest in bettering  public service.”
    Hess, who retired July 2, was hired March 1, 1975, as a district court probation officer,  certified through the Michigan De-partment of Corrections. On April 1, 1996, he was promoted to 7th District Court administrator/magistrate, a position he held until his retirement.
    Hess recently received the 2018  Administrator of the Year by the Michigan Court Administrators Association, of which he has been a member since 1996.
    Susan K. Zuiderveen has been appointed as the new magistrate for 7th District Court.
