District title eludes 2019 Redskins
Dowagiac - Paw Paw’s girls soccer team, one of the top programs in Southwestern Michigan for a decade-and-a-half, saw its amazing string of success end last Thursday with a 6-4 defeat by Coloma in the MHSAA District Tourney finals.
The Redskins had reached the District title round for the 15th year in a row, winning 13 of the last 14, and the last 11 straight. But the young and fast Comets proved to be difficult to keep up with putting a lot of pressure on the Reds’ net. Tied 2-2 at the break, the game stayed tight and competitive until the end.
Kate Nelson produced two of Paw Paw’s scores, with one apiece for Claudia Muessig and Kailie Yar-brough.
Paw Paw ends the year 9-6-2; the finals matchup was just the second time the Reds had surrendered more than three goals throughout the year. With a large cast of quality players returning, and a lot of JV team talent moving up, it is very possible next season will launch another streak of tournament success.
