Wildcats down Lakeshore for chance at title

With an exciting, 2-1, shootout win over Stevensville Lakeshore Tuesday night at St. Joseph, the Mattawan girls soccer team moves on to the District final game.
The first half was a defensive battle on both ends of the field. Mattawan goalkeeper, sophomore Emma Gariepy made an impressive stop of Lakeshore’s only shot on the goal in the first half. The stop held the game scoreless at halftime.
The second half brought several more impressive stops from Gariepy, while her teammate Jenna Bussott scored the first goal of the game on a long solo shot from about 20 yards out. The goal gave Mattawan a 1-0 lead halfway through the half, and the Wildcats held Lakeshore scoreless until the very last moments of regulation time. With 24 seconds left, Lakeshore worked around the Wildcat defense and found the back of the net. The goal sent the game into overtime.
Although both teams came close, neither scored during the overtime session. So, with the game still tied at one-all, a shootout was called for. Each team is given five shots, the team that scores the most out of the five attempts wins the game.
Gariepy remained strong and Mattawan won the shootout, 4-2, giving the Wildcats the 2-1 District semi-final win and the chance to play for the title. The Wildcats will face St. Joseph tomorrow (Saturday) at 10  a.m.  in St. Joe. The team has played the Bears once already this season. That game ended in a 0-0 tie.
