Lawrence wins District

The Lawrence Tigers varsity softball team captured the 2019 District championship, at Decatur Saturday, June 1, defeating the Decatur Raiders, 6-4.     After mauling Eau Claire, 18-0, the Lawrence softball team landed in the District championship game, where the Tigers faced the Decatur Raiders in a Division 4 matchup.
    Lawrence started out strong, taking the lead early.  Morgan Coombs brought in Erika Gonzalez for an RBI. Not long after, Morgan Munson brought in Kali Reed with a single to third base. Lawrence held the 2-0 lead until the bottom of the second inning when the Raiders scored their first run.
    During their next at bat, the Tigers answered with a run by Valerie Norris on a single from Morgan Coombs,  putting the Tigers up, 3-1.     
    Decatur evened things up in the third inning with the help of several Lawrence  errors. But the Tigers re-gained the lead during the next inning. Erika Gonzalez brought in two runs with a hit for Lawrence.The Raiders scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning to close the gap to one run at 5-4.
    Peyton Murney brought in Megan Paige for Law-rence’s final run in the sixth inning, and Lawrence claimed the trophy, 6-4. Senior Valerie Norris was the winning pitcher for Lawrence, throwing all seven innings, allowing five hits and four runs, and striking out nine batters.
    The Tigers advance to Regional play, Saturday, June 8 in Gobles, where they will take on Kalamazoo Christian in a semi-final game at 10 a.m.
