The Mattawan softball team, hosting the Division 1 District 9 tournament Sat-urday, defeated Portage Central, 8-3, in the semi-final and advanced to the championship game.
Tied 1-1 with the Mustangs after the second inning, the Wildcats produced five runs in the third  to essentially seal their victory. Three of the five runs came when Kacey Bouche got ahold of the first pitch of her at bat for a three-run homer and a Mattawan 6-1 lead. Portage Central scored two runs off a double to cut into the Wildcats’ lead, but did not score again.
The District title bout pitted Mattawan against the St. Joe Bears, who opened  the game by taking a one run lead over the Wildcats.  Mattawan came back in the bottom of the second in-ning, when sophomore Alyssa Bloomfield hit a sacrifice fly to right field, bringing in Eden Beck to tie the game. During their next at bat, the Bears scored two more runs off of an error and a single, taking a 3-1 lead. But Bouche kept the Wildcats alive with another homerun on her first pitch. The junior sent the ball over center field, while three Wildcats crossed home plate for a 4-3 lead.
St. Joe batters saved the day with a two-run home run in the sixth inning and then a solo homerun in the final frame to take the District crown, 6-4.
Mattawan ended the season with an overall record of 23-14.
