Paw Paw’s season ended by Three Rivers

Butch Hindenach -

There has been much rain and thunder and lightning this spring sport season, but Tuesday night the fireworks came from the Paw Paw-Three Rivers District softball game. The result was a 20-10 win for the Lady Wildcats, ending Paw Paw’s season.
Three Rivers super star Kali Heilivin was in the center of the offensive show with a pair of home runs, giving her a remarkable 40 on the year.  Redskin Maddi Wilder ended a fine season with a four-bagger, her eighth home run of the season, with Emma Hasse collecting two of her team’s six, as did Wilder.

At Coloma last week, playing their fifth and sixth games in three days, the Redskin softball team lost one tough decision, and were routed in the other, 10-9 and 18-8, by non-conference foe Coloma.
In the tight contest, the Redskins jumped out to a 9-2 lead after three, but were unable to touch  home plate again. A seven-run fourth inning plus a score in the bottom of the seventh made it a Comet win.
The Redskins flexed their muscles at bats featuring a triple and two singles by Hannah Mellinger, three hits from Maddi Wilder, and a home run by Courtney Ellis, who went four for four on the day.  Emily Vanderburg and Audrey Straka also each contributed two hits to the 15  hit attack.
Game two was decided early with the home team taking a 12-0 lead after a nine-run third frame to end the game by the mercy rule.      Wilder blasted a pair of home runs good for six RBI and Mellinger also went over the fence and added a two base hit.

At home last Tuesday, the Lady Reds had a rough day at the park. For the second day in a row they had problems with a tough pack of Bulldogs.  This time it was the ’Dawgs from Otsego who put on an offensive fireworks show, sweeping the day 8-4 and 14-2.
In the opener, Otsego took a 7-0 lead after the top of the fifth inning, and held on for an 8-4 victory.  Hannah Mellinger had the hot bat for the Lady Reds with three hits including a two bagger, with Emily Vanderburg adding a single and double.  Mercedes Strachan, and Raelynn Degroff contributed on base hit apiece.
Four-run innings in the first, fourth, and fifth frames put the second game away in a five-inning mercy shortened second game with Mellinger and Strachan collecting only two hits by the home team.

At Vicksburg last Monday, a huge offensive day by the the Bulldogs earned the home team 11-1 and 15-4 victories over Paw Paw.
A seven-run fifth inning, and 10 runs over the fourth and fifth frames of the other game produced 11-1 and 15-4 Bulldogs wins.  In the first game, the Lady ’Skins managed just four hits, all singles, by Hannah Mellinger, Courtney Ellis, Maddi Wilder, and Emma Hasse.
Hits were more plentiful in the second game with eight safeties by the Reds; but the Lady ’Dogs put a large crooked number of 15 on the scoreboard to take the game.      Redskin hits included one each from Mellinger, Ellis, Wilder, Emily Vanderberg, Brooke Vyverman, Emma Hasse, Emma Kooi, and Raelyn DeGroff.
