Last weekend, brought a tough opponent to the Lawrence baseball team. The Tigers hosted the state-ranked Summerfield Bulldogs, who opened the game by scoring two runs in their first at bat on their way to a 6-0 defeat of the home team.
With one out in the third inning, a Summerfield single to center field set off what would result in a three-run inning and a 5-0 lead early in the game for the Bulldogs.
Zach Payment gave the Tigers a glimmer of hope in the fifth inning when he hit a line drive single to left field, then advanced to second with a Bulldog error on the play. Teammate Jakob Edson laid down the perfect sacrifice bunt to move Payment to third base; but the inning ended with Payment stranded on third.
During their final at bat Summerfield landed one final blow on two defensive errors by the Tigers.
Taking the loss for Lawrence was pitcher Dylan Matheny, who went four innings, and allowed five runs on eight hits.
The offense was led by Ethan Payment, Zach Payment and Chris Schuman, who each contributed one hit.
The Tigers will travel to Michigan Lutheran on Tuesday in hopes of adding a win to their record.
