The Lawrence Tigers hosted the River Valley Mustangs for a doubleheader Tuesday evening, and lost 7-0 and 10-3. In the first game, River Valley wasted no time grabbing the lead, when the lead-off hitter smacked a line drive double, and later made his way home on an error by Lawrence. The Mustangs increased their one-run lead in the top of the third inning when they scored one more run. Lawrence pitcher, Dylan Matheny, kept the Mustangs from bringing in another run by serving up a strikeout, stranding a runner at third.
With his Tigers trailing by four in the sixth inning, sophomore Chris Schuman tried to ignite the offense. With no outs, Schuman hit a long line drive single; but later, on an attempted steal, was called out by the umpire, which sparked some controversy. The Mustangs added to their lead with three runs in their final at bat.
Leading the Tigers on offense was Schuman with his one hit. Matheny struck out eight Mustangs and gave up four hits as the losing pitcher.
In the second game, Lawrence played catch-up right from the start when River Valley scored four runs in the top of the first inning. With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Dylan Matheny and Ethan Payment each earned singles to answer back for Lawrence. But, the pair were left on base when the Mustang defense secured the final out.
The first runs of the evening for Lawrence came in the third inning when Shuman and Matheny each found his way around the bases. The two runs made it a 6-2 game in the Mustangs’ favor. The only other run for Lawrence would come in the bottom of the fourth inning, and the game was called after a scoreless fifth inning.
Lawrence pitcher Ethan Payment took the 10-3 loss for the Tigers. Payment lasted three innings and struck out two River Valley batters.
