The Mattawan baseball team split a doubleheader with Stevensville Lakeshore Tuesday, winning the first game 4-0, but dropping the second 5-4.
Josh Swinehart opened the second inning with a double to left field for the Wildcats. He then scored when Lucas Slager hit a long single up the middle. Mattawan held a one run lead until the top of the fifth inning.
Slager again scored the only run of the inning. A line drive single followed by two ground outs put Slager on third base. Luke Kerrins brought Slager in with a line drive to right field and Mattawan took a 2-0 lead.
Connor Schuman scored a run in the sixth inning, and added one more in the seventh to cap off the shut out. Tanner Knapp took the 4-0 victory for Mattawan, pitching all seven innings, allowing only two hits, and striking out 10 with no walks.
Mattawan took an early one-run lead over the Lancers in the nightcap. Max Huntley got on base with a single to center field and Kyle VanLiere sent him home with a hard ground ball.
The Lancers took their first lead of the evening in the bottom of the first inning, going up 3-1 on a single, double and a Mattawan error.
Mattawan tied the game in the third inning when Schuman and VanLiere again found their way around the bases. Then in the fourth inning, sophomore Parker Neel hit a solo homerun to give Mattawan a 4-3 lead over the Lancers.
But, in the bottom of the sixth inning Lakeshore grabbed the victory with a triple and a single to bring in two runners.
Mattawan hosts the District tournament June 1 with five area teams as their guests.
