COLOMA - A disastrous fourth quarter was very costly for Paw Paw and resulted in a 70-55 defeat by the Coloma Comets Tuesday evening.
The non-conference contest began with Mitchell Mason scoring a lay-up off the opening tip, and Ross Vaickus scored a pair of early baskets for Paw Paw; but it took a three pointer by Caleb Bowen that beat the first period buzzer to draw the Redskins to within six points after eight minutes of play. In the second quarter, the Reds got their fast break going several times, but a lack of success at the hoop was harmful to the transition game.  Finlay Tate kept the game close, scoring 13 points in the quarter, including a trio of treys.  Clayton Bretch connected from beyond the arc in the final seconds to create a 30-30 deadlock at the intermission.
The teams battled quite evenly when play resumed with Mason supplying the last eight Redskin tallies to make it a two point game as the final stanza began. At that juncture, the roof caved in on the Redskins for they misfired on their first seven shots from the floor while the Comets hit four for four over the same time frame.  It was a seven point game when Tate finally connected from beyond the arc, but perhaps the score keeper failed to put the points on the scoreboard. What should have been a 55-51 game remained 55-48, and the three point error was never rectified even after time ran out.  Game film showed it definitely was a scoring error, but it is impossible to say how much difference it could have meant in the final result, although it became a 63-48 game on the scoreboard before a Bowen free toss finally produced a point that gained the approval of the Comets score person.
Tate had a team high 19 points, followed by Mason with 10, Bretch with seven, Bowen with six, Vaickus, five, and Andrew Vorce, four.  Leading rebounder was Bretch with six, and Vaickus and Tate each contributed five. Tate dished out four assists, and Bretch took two charges on defense.
