PAW PAW - The Wolverine Conference opening girls basketball game Friday night was not a success for the young Paw Paw squad, culminating in a 50-41 defeat by Vicksburg.  However, there were signs of im-provement in a game where the Lady Bulldogs held a small lead much of the way.
The Lady Reds reduced their turnovers by about one-third, while they improved their shooting, at least from two-point range, by about one-third. Long distance has been a problem in both games thus far, with just two connections on 27 attempts from beyond the three point arc.
Paw Paw continues to play a strong and aggressive defense which kept them in the game Friday night.  Freshman Taylor Rickli showed promise with a team-leading nine points, hitting three of just five shot attempts and playing well at the other end of the court also.  Kierra Krogel added eight points and Katie Marger, six, followed by Morgan Dwyer with five, Emma Kooi and Anna Vavra, four apiece, Ellie Marger, three, and Lillian Fulcher, two points.
Katie Marger was the leading play maker with four assists. Fulcher claimed four steals, and Vavra pulled down six rebounds. Other strong defensive performances were turned in by Vavra, Kooi, and the Marger sisters.
In earlier games, the freshmen won their second straight outing, 24-22, while the junior varsity dropped to 0-2 for the season.

The Paw Paw girls entertained Edwardsburg Tuesday, falling to their guests, 65-15.
