Gobles cross country off and running

   The Gobles cross country team is looking to improve from last year. The boys placed fifth at the Southwestern Athletic Conference meet last year, while the girls finished in ninth place.
   “We have been working hard to prepare for this season and the boys are hopeful to go to State again,” said Gobles Coach Marc Kline. “Also, Keaghan Kelly has a shot at going to state for the third year in a row. Nile Devers looks to improve from a very solid ninth grade year as he comes off an outstanding track season last spring.” 
   For their first meet of the season, the Tigers traveled to Hesperia, where the boys finished in fourth place with 100 points. Saugatuck won the meet with 30 points.
   Sophomore Nile Devers placed ninth with a time of 19:43.36, followed by James Tarkkanen, 28th (23:01.56); Mickey Kohlert, 34th (23:51.12); Gavin Hancox, 36th (23:53.60); Cesar Martinez, 40th (25:03.92); Gavin Bair, 41st (25:06.06);  Gabe Miller, 42nd (25:07.11);  Drew Thorpe, 54th  (30:25.20); and James Goerke 57th (34:21.12). 
   The girls did not have enough runners for a team score.Individually, Keaghan Kelly placed 31st with a time of 30:29.01; Kaylee Chaney, 46th (34:19.94); Valerie Whitten, 48th (36:31.49); and Alana Lee, 50th (37:24.31).

   On Tuesday night the Tigers ran at Warner Camp in the Southwest Michigan Rustbuster XC Invitational. Jenison was the winning boys team with 20 points. Paw Paw placed third, and Gobles was fourth.  Gobles’ Nile Devers was eighth overall with a time of 17:57.43. Teammate James Tarkkanen had a time of 30:41.37 and Gavin Hancox 20:48.72. 
   Jenison won the girls race with 29 points with Paw Paw coming in second with 85 points.
   The Gobles girls team placed ninth. Keaghan Kelly ran a 28:00.59, Alana Lee 30:00.42 and Laurel Burke 30:43.16.
