Lawton edged out of Districts

The Lawton Blue Devils faced off against Kalamazoo Heritage Christian in the second round of District soccer play this week looking for a win and the chance to move on to the next round of the tournament. But, after 80 minutes of a tough, even match, the Blue Devils found themselves down, 2-3, and their season was brought to an end.
The Eagles spent most of the first half on offense, giving their goalie a break. While the Eagles kept the ball on the Blue Devil side of the field, they were able to take few decent shots on goal. Lawton goal keeper Andrew O’Donnell stopped all but one of those shots,  a free kick after a Blue Devil foul.
Lawton played most of the first half down 1-0, and struggled to get the ball into scoring position. The Blue Devils did eventually find the back of the Eagle goal with a shot by senior Andrew Stermer to tie the match up at 1-1 at the half.
In the second half, the teams picked up the pace, and the scoring, aware that they were in a lose-and-go-home situation.  The game went back and forth, point for point, in what appeared as frenzied scoring from time to time.  If the Eagles scored the Blue Devils would match that score in short order to tie the game back up.
With only 11 minutes left in the game, the Blue Devils tied the score at 2, and turned up the pressure. At the two-minute mark, the Eagles slipped one more ball past the Blue Devils to take the lead for the last time.  While the Blue Devils scrambled to match the Eagles’ goal, they were not able to, and stayed on the short side of the 3-2 final score.
