As they have in most of their games this season, the Mattawan Wildcats completely dominated the field last week, hosting Three Rivers for the first round of District soccer action, and wasting little time recording an 8-0 mercy win.
Mattawan already had a two goal lead when sharp shooter Connor Burkett put his team up 3-0 with a solo score. The Wildcats kept the ball near the Three Rivers goal for almost the entire game. Senior James Sobol booted a hard ball toward the defending goalie that rebounded off the goalie’s chest and Sobol followed his own kick with a second shot on the goal that landed in the back of the net, putting Mattawan up 4-0.
The Wildcat offense continued to attack with several more shots on the Three Rivers goal; then took a 5-0  lead when Christian DeMott found Joshua Filiputti who booted the ball into the goal. Just moments later, Filiputti, earned a solo goal when the Wildcats quickly ran the ball back after the kick off from the previous point.
Mattawan will face Stevensville Lakeshore in the semifinal round. A win against the Lancers would give Mattawan a chance at the District title, Saturday, against St. Joe at noon. All District games are being played at the Paw Paw High School soccer fields.
