PAW PAW - After inclement weather delayed the start of  Paw Paw’s girls soccer season early last week, a very young Lady Redskin team took the field Friday evening  and quickly got off to a good start with a mercy rule-shortened 8-0 win over the Lady Panthers of Parchment.
The opening roster listed one senior, five juniors, four sophomores, and four freshmen, and that number was increased when Parchment’s lack of a JV team allowed several more young talents to perform on the higher level.
In fact, youth was served quickly as freshman Kailie Yarbrough’s shot opened the scoring for the evening.  After that, Claudia Muessig, last year’s leading scorer, found the net twice; and after she and Yarbrough had each tallied again, the home team held an early 5-0 lead with the game well in hand.
Kate Nelson added a goal of her own, and freshman Melayne Curtis joined the scoring parade; and after ninth grader Julia Hindenach barely missed, hitting the cross bar on a laser shot, classmate Baylee Smith ended the game early with the eighth Paw Paw goal.
The Lady Reds controlled play throughout, with the visitors getting only three quality shots off. Rachel Babcock was in goal for the first half, giving way to Kylie Cox, and then Lillian Fulcher to finish the game.
Muessig, Yarbrough, and Kaylie Eick each recorded an assist in what was a impressive kickoff to the new season by the entire team.
