The Gobles girls softball team started the 2019 season with a big 15-4 win over Allegan this week. Gobles bats were hot on this sunny day, and the Tigers scored seven runs in the first inning. The Tigers were smooth on the base paths as they stole nine bases, with Libbee Nason collecting three of them.
Emily Lopez got the job done in the circle for Gobles, pitching three innings, allowing four hits and picking up the win. Chris-tiana Hunt came in for two innings in relief.
Gobles had nine hits in the game, with Hunt leading the way, going 3-4 with a double. Maddy Brady, Emily Baxter, Tatum Miller, Amanda Barber, Maddy Tiller and McKenzie Lisowski each collected a hit in the game.
The second game went just four innings before darkness set in. Gobles once again had a big first inning, scoring six runs on the way to the 10-8 win.
Allegan fought back, scoring seven runs in the last two innings; but it was not enough as Gobles kicked off the season with the double win.
The Tigers used lots of pitchers. Hunt went two innings, allowing one hit and was the winning pitcher. Barber pitched one inn-ing, allowing three hits; Maddy Rose (0.2) and Emily Lopez (0.1) shared an inning. Five Gobles players had one hit each in the game: Hunt, Nason (DBL), Tiller (triple), Miller, and Barber.
“This year’s Gobles varsity softball team is going into the season with a very optimistic attitude,” said Gobles Coach Pam West-cott. “The team consists of four seniors, three juniors, two sophomores, and six freshmen; so, we have both experience and energy.
“It’s a team that should be strong on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, and we definitely want to attack the game with aggressive baserunning. Seniors are: Rhaney Harris, Emily Lopez, Tatum Miller, and Maddy Tiller.”
