The Mattawan softball team added two wins to its record on Tuesday evening, sweeping Stevensville Lakeshore, 9-4 and 10-4.
The Wildcats quickly loaded the bases in the opening inning. A hit by pitch followed by back-to-back walks gave Mattawan an easy start at the lead. Olivia Fee brought in the first run for Mattawan with a single, followed by Leah Wrubel with a double that brought in two runs for Mattawan, up 4-0 after their first at bat.
The Lancers sharply responded with a three-run homerun that tightened the score to 4-3. It turned out to be an evening of homeruns for both teams.
During the third inning Mattawan’s Leah Wrubel, hit a two-run homer to give Mattawan a 6-3 lead. At their next at bat the Lancers would managed a single homerun, to cut the Wildcats lead to two runs. Mattawan scored one run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to give them the 9-4 victory.
The Lancers earned a two-run lead in the first inning of the second game, but Mattawan’s Kendra Cardoza hit a hard single to right field, bringing in two runs and giving Mattawan the lead in the third inning. Leah Wrubel bumped it up to a 5-2 advantage, hitting a double to bring in two runs.
With another homerun from Wrubel, Mattawan held a comfortable 9-2 lead over the Lancers when they  managed one run in the fifth inning and one more solo homerun in the sixth inning to end the game with Mattawan on top, 10-4.
Mattawan will kick off the District tournament on May 28, facing Kalamazoo Central at home, at 5 p.m.
