Mattawan girls win Regional tennis title

   The Mattawan Wildcat tennis team is heading to the state finals after winning Regionals last week. The team earned the title after earning a total 26 points, seven points higher than second place Portage Central.
   The Wildcats completely dominated the singles portion of the tournament with all four singles players claiming first place finishes. In No. 1 singles, Kate Novak beat  the first-place seed from Portage Central, 6-4, 6-4 to win the overall singles championship. Novak is currently ranked fourth in the state. Liz Novak went the entire day without losing a set in No. 2 singles. The freshman beat Portage Central in the finals, 6-0, 6-0 for the title.    
   Another freshman, Romika Shokohi defeated three No. 3 singles  players, including Sturgis in the finals, 6-0 and 6-1, to land on top. Camryn Baney then downed the number two seed from Zeeland East in the third set of the No. 4 singles final to take her crown, 4-6, 6-3 and 6-1.
   Multiple doubles partners made it deep into the tournament. Lily Ross and Meredith Smola fell to Portage Central in the No. 1 championship match, 6-3 and 6-2. No. 2 doubles partners Juliette Langlinais and Olivia Eubank lost in the semi-final round to Zeeland East. No. 3 duo Natalie Muresan and Grace Bon-nema fell to Zeeland East in the championship match, 6-4, 6-3.  Audrey Dorman and Isabel Chiang lost in the No. 4 semi-final round to Holland, 6-4, 0-6 and 6-3.
