Mattawan wins one of two Portage matches

   MATTAWAN - The Mattawan girls tennis team spent the day hosting Portage Northern and Portage Central last week. As a team, the Wildcats beat Portage Northern, but dropped the second match-up to Portage Central.
   Earning individual wins for Mattawan were turned in by Kate Novak, Meredith Smola, and Lily Ross in singles flights. In No. 1 singles, the sophomore Novak defeated her Portage Northern opponent, 6-0, 6-1, and Portage Central foe, 6-0, 6-3. Novak was the only singles Wildcat to defeat both her opponents this day.
   Smola defeated Portage Central, 6-0, 6-3, in No. 2 singles; and Ross won her first match of the day against Portage Northern, 6-2, 6-2 in No. 4 singles.
   In doubles competition, No. 1 pair Eleri Irish and Juliette Langlinais defeated Portage Northern 6-3, 4-6 and 6-1. The No. 2 doubles match went into a tie-breaking third set, which Grace Bonnema and Olivia Eubank won 6-4, 3-6, and 6-2.
   Third doubles duo Lilia Farrugia and Aubrey Hayward defeated Portage Northern, 6-3, 6-3.
   The Lady Wildcats will travel to Kalamazoo Central on Monday, April 30, to take on the Maroon Giants in hopes of adding another win to their 2-1-1 record.
