LAWTON - The Lawton Blue Devils hosted their neighbors to the north, Paw Paw, for a friendly, but hard-fought match.  Both coaches, Lawton’s Megan McCorry and Paw Paw’s Emily Sheets, are familiar with each other as they share players in the off-season.
The two teams were very evenly matched, both having equal assets in strong hitters backed up by some quick reacting back row talent digging the ball to keep it in play. Numerous volleys seemed to go on endlessly with both sides making miraculous saves. Lawton had Madison Lawson, Josie Buchowski and Jessica Grear at the net hammering the ball at the Redskins. Lawson, it was announced, needed just 19 kills to top 500 in her high school career.
On the Paw Paw side was Elise Burk hitting on the outside and Anna Vavra killing it from the middle. The Redskins had a few extra girls helping out with the kills with Carley Holter, Nikki Toliver on the outside and McKenzie Wilson getting at it in the middle.
Game one went to the Redskins with a score of 25-23. The Blue Devils came back to take game two, 25-22, and game three, 25-17. The Redskins won the next game, 25-19, taking the match to a fifth set.
In that deciding 15-point set, Paw Paw took a sizable lead.  Lawton was in serious trouble with the Redskins up, 14-7, when they took over serving. But, point after point, the Blue Devils battled back until the teams were tied at 14. With momentum on their side, the Blue Devils made the last two points and claimed the 5th set and the 3-2 win.
Play was exciting and back and forth all night long keeping the gym charged with enthusiasm. Lawson did get her 500th kill in game four, with the help of her teammates throughout the match.  Coach Megan McCorry called a time out to get her girls together as they were all celebrating Lawson’s achievement. According to McCorry, the team motto for the night was “feed the beast”. Setter Kiana Auton worked to set the ball for Lawson, but also spread the ball around to the team for the best advantage.  She found her hitters and noted how they matched up with the blockers on the other side of the net.
After the game, Lawson said, “This is pretty awesome.  I’ve been working on this for the past two years... I was trying not to freak out!” On her 500th, Lawson got the set to the middle and she seemed to elevate and simply hit the ball to the open spot for the kill.
Both the Blue Devils and the Redskins will start District play next week. Paw Paw will play on Monday in South Haven against Coloma and the Blue Devils face off against Marcellus on Tuesday at home.
