Road Commission proposes county-wide millage to fund road improvements

    PAW PAW - A proposed new  Van Buren County road funding package was presented to  at the Van Buren County Commissioners Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday afternoon.
    Van Buren County Road Commission Engineer-Manager Law-rence Hummel presented the request to place on the Aug.  7, ballot, a proposal for a 3-mil levy for maintenance, repair and reconstruction of all public streets, avenues and roads in Van Buren County for a period of 12 years.
    According to Hummel, the proposed 3-mil county-wide millage will fund $7.2 million worth of primary  road improvements each year.
    The plan for the first four years of the millage would improve 135 miles of primary roads  around the county. It would include County Road 388, Red Arrow Highway and Blue Star Highway, from end to end, as well as multiple sections of other high volume primary roads.
    The Van Buren County Road Commission maintains 1,330 miles of road. Primary roads, those with CR designations, as well as Blue Star Highway and Red Arrow Highway, consist of approximately 350 miles in Van Buren County.
    Van Buren County Commissioners are  expected to take official action on the proposed road millage at the next Van Buren County Commissioners meeting, Wednesday, March 28, which was moved from Tuesday, March 27.
    In another area, Dennis Reynolds, representing Van Buren Emergency Medical Services, (VBEMS), presented a  request to place an ambulance millage renewal proposal on the Aug. 7,  ballot in an amount of an estimated .9402 mil  (expiring mil and being updated for Headlee purposes) for the exclusive use of ambulance services for a period of four years.
    Commissioners will take up that request also on March 28, the next regular Board of Commissioners meeting.
    Also, Van Buren County Sheriff  Daniel Abbott presented COW members with a request to place a public safety millage renewal proposal on the Aug. 7 ballot in the amount of .5332 mil for the exclusive use of the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office for drug enforcement and road patrol for a period of four years.
